Philippines delays announcement of 2027 Oscars entry

MANILA, Philippines — The Film Academy of the Philippines has postponed the announcement of the country’s official entry to the 99th Academy Awards, or the 2027 Oscars, saying its National Selection Committee needs more time to complete its deliberations.

The announcement had originally been scheduled for Sept. 4, according to the Film Academy’s notice issued by Director-General Jose Paolo L. Villaluna.

“The Film Academy’s announcement of the Philippines’ official entry to the 99th Academy Awards (2027 Oscars) will be postponed to a later date,” Villaluna said in the statement.

The National Selection Committee is continuing its evaluation of films submitted for consideration and has opted to take additional time before making its recommendation, the statement said.

“Given the significance of representing Philippine cinema on the international stage, the Film Academy considers it important to allow the selection process the time and consideration it requires,” Villaluna said.

The Film Academy did not give a new date for the announcement. It said the date would be communicated once the selection process has been completed.

“Further announcements will be made through the Film Academy of the Philippines’ official channels,” Villaluna said.

The statement does not identify which films remain under consideration or indicate when the committee is expected to conclude its deliberations.

The Philippines’ eventual selection will compete for consideration in the international feature film category at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled as the 2027 Oscars.
