BAGUIO CITY – Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO) is spearheading a groundbreaking advancement in the nation’s electric cooperative sector, as announced in a statement released today by the cooperative.

Employing state-of-the-art “fault locator technology,” BENECO aims to detect abnormalities in its distribution system, preventing potential power interruptions.

Mario Calatan, head of BENECO’s special equipment and metering office, lauds the innovation as a significant enhancement to their Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

“The Pelican ElektroMek Supply, Inc. (PEMSI) offered such a rare technology which triangulates fault locations. This means the system can pinpoint exactly where the fault lies within a 10 meter radius. It also has the ability to detect grass and forest fires that threaten the distribution lines,“ Calatan said.

This technology, unprecedented among Philippine electric cooperatives, promises swift fault detection and preemptive action.

Unlike its counterparts, BENECO’s proactive approach is supported by a fault triangulation system, capable of pinpointing faults within a 10-meter radius.

Furthermore, it can detect external threats like grass and forest fires endangering distribution lines.

The pilot project targets areas prone to power interruptions, with plans for widespread implementation pending successful trials.

Recognized by the Department of Energy as a Level 2 smart distribution utility, BENECO is well-positioned to lead this technological leap.

By integrating remote voltage regulators, capacitor banks, and advanced management systems, BENECO aims to mitigate outage impact and duration.

The ongoing development of a Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR) system underscores its commitment to reliability.

Building on past milestones, such as SCADA integration in 2007, BENECO remains at the forefront of innovation.

Efforts to streamline operations through real-time job order tracking demonstrate a holistic approach to efficiency and service excellence.

With this latest endeavor, BENECO sets a new standard for power distribution, signaling a transformative era in the cooperative’s history.
