BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday will be backed by more than a thousand police officers from the Cordillera Administrative Region, as authorities step up nationwide security preparations while the President finalizes what he described as a report on his administration’s accomplishments and response to current challenges.

The Police Regional Office–Cordillera Administrative Region (PRO CAR) on Sunday said it had deployed 1,036 personnel to Metro Manila to augment security operations for the July 27 SONA at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City.

The contingent, drawn from provincial and city police offices, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 15 and other support units, will help secure key government installations, major thoroughfares, designated protest areas and the Batasang complex alongside police personnel from other regions, PRO CAR said.

PRO CAR Regional Director Brig. Gen. Ericson D. Dilag said the deployed officers represent the discipline and professionalism expected of Cordilleran police personnel and reminded them to remain vigilant, exercise maximum tolerance and strictly observe operational procedures.

The regional police office said enough personnel would remain across the Cordillera Administrative Region to sustain police visibility, maintain peace and order and ensure uninterrupted public safety services while the augmentation force is deployed in the National Capital Region.

The deployment comes as Marcos said his SONA speech was about 90% complete but continued to undergo revisions ahead of Monday’s address.

Speaking to reporters on Friday after inaugurating the Department of Health–Jose B. Lingad Children’s Medical Center at Clark Freeport Zone in Mabalacat City, Pampanga, the President said he viewed the annual SONA as an accounting to the Filipino people of what his administration had accomplished since last year’s address.

Marcos said the speech would discuss how the government responded to economic and geopolitical challenges, saying policy adjustments had helped Filipinos weather difficult global conditions.

“Our response has been good, and we have had to make adjustments. But those adjustments have been effective and have served their purpose, and I know that it has helped people weather this storm,” he said.

Asked whether he would revisit corruption issues raised during last year’s SONA, Marcos replied, “Abangan ang susunod na kabanata.” (“Stay tuned for the next chapter.”)

The President also said he typically continues editing the speech until shortly before delivering it, despite saying that its language was already “90-plus percent done.”

Marcos is scheduled to deliver his fifth State of the Nation Address at 4 p.m. Monday before a joint session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa Complex, where thousands of police officers and other security personnel are expected to secure the venue, surrounding areas and designated protest sites.
