MANILA — SM Prime Holdings Inc. is accelerating its transition to renewable energy, transforming its nationwide chain of shopping centers into decentralized energy hubs powered by rooftop solar installations.

The company said it has installed solar panels across 65 hectares of mall rooftops, a footprint nearly equivalent to the entire SM Mall of Asia complex.

The initiative, which began in 2014 with its first installation at SM North EDSA, now generates enough clean energy to power cities the size of Mabalacat in Pampanga or Mandaue in Cebu.

The expansion is aimed at easing pressure on the country’s power grid while improving electricity availability in surrounding communities, the company said.

“The use of solar power enables SM Supermalls to elevate the service we provide to our customers by embedding sustainability into our daily operations,” said Steven Tan, president of SM Supermalls.

He added that integrating renewable energy into mall operations helps reduce carbon emissions while ensuring that more power resources remain accessible beyond commercial use.

Rooftops Turned Energy Assets

Beyond scale, SM said it is maximizing underutilized rooftop spaces to improve energy efficiency across its properties.

The installations form part of a broader sustainability push as energy demand rises alongside urban growth.

The company did not disclose total megawatt capacity but emphasized that its solar rollout is now significant enough to contribute meaningfully to local energy supply, particularly during peak demand periods.

Supporting Grid Stability

Industry observers note that large-scale commercial solar adoption can help stabilize power supply in the Philippines, where grid congestion and energy costs remain persistent challenges.

By generating power onsite, SM reduces its dependence on the national grid while indirectly freeing up capacity for nearby residential and industrial users.

The company said its solar program reflects a long-term commitment to responsible resource management, positioning its malls not only as commercial centers but also as contributors to environmental sustainability and energy resilience.
