SM Supermalls reports 6.6B liters water recycled in 2025

BAGUIO CITY – SM Supermalls said it recycled about 6.6 million cubic meters, or 6.6 billion liters of water in 2025, as it expanded water conservation and reuse systems across its mall network in the Philippines.

The figure, equivalent to roughly a thousand times Metro Manila’s daily water consumption, underscores the retail giant’s push toward circular water use amid growing climate stress and recurring El Niño conditions, according to a company statement.

The initiative, which began in the 1990s with the installation of a sewage treatment plant at SM Supermalls’ SM Southmall, has grown into a network-wide program covering 90 malls with wastewater recycling facilities.

SM said recycled water is used for non-potable applications such as cleaning, irrigation, and landscaping, reducing reliance on fresh water sources.

Among its infrastructure projects, SM City Baguio operates a rainwater treatment facility that has processed 53,740 cubic meters of rainwater since 2022.

The company also cited systems at SM City La Union and SM City Laoag, which include rainwater catchment and self-sustaining water networks.

SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability Liza B. Silerio said the company continues to scale up environmental systems across its properties, citing long-term resilience and resource security as key priorities.

The group also highlighted recognition from Philippine environmental agencies for water stewardship initiatives across its mall estate, including projects at SM Mall of Asia.
