BAGUIO CITY, Philippines, Jan. 10, 2026 — The steady sweep of brush against crimson paper drew quiet admiration at the Media Fellowship Night hosted by the Baguio Filipino-Chinese Community, as Chinese calligraphy took center stage in this year’s Spring Festival celebration.
Held at the Titanium Hall of Hotel Supreme Mall & Events Center in Baguio City, the evening’s cultural highlight featured a live demonstration of traditional brushwork by young Chinese calligraphers including Wang Weiqing, Chen Zhongwei, and Xing Bing of the University of Baguio.
Before an audience of media practitioners and community leaders, the calligraphers dipped fine brushes into black ink and, with measured precision, formed elegant Chinese characters symbolizing prosperity, harmony and good fortune.
Each deliberate stroke reflected years of discipline — a reminder that calligraphy is not merely handwriting, but a centuries-old art rooted in philosophy.
“It is both an art form and a philosophy,” a community representative said, explaining that the demonstration aimed to deepen appreciation of traditions that continue to shape the Filipino-Chinese identity.
As ink settled into bright red paper — a color traditionally associated with luck and celebration — spectators leaned closer to observe the balance and fluidity of each character.
The performance underscored how calligraphy demands patience, control and mindfulness, values long embedded in Chinese heritage.
The Spring Festival, widely celebrated by Filipino-Chinese communities across the country, has become a fixture in Baguio’s cultural calendar.
For generations, Baguio’s Filipino-Chinese community has contributed to the city’s development in education, commerce and civic life.
Events such as the calligraphy showcase reflect continuing efforts to preserve heritage while engaging broader audiences.
As the final characters dried under the hall’s warm lights, the inked symbols stood as living expressions of tradition, bridging past and present in the City of Pines.
