BAGUIO CITY — A rondalla ensemble composed primarily of persons with visual impairment is drawing weekend audiences at SM City Baguio, where regular performances are providing both a platform for Filipino music and an additional source of livelihood for its members, according to SM Supermalls.

The Philippine Rondalla Serenata performs every weekend at the mall under SM Supermalls’ busking program, an initiative the company said supports local artists while promoting inclusion and cultural appreciation.

According to SM Supermalls, many members of the ensemble first learned to play traditional Filipino string instruments at Bahay Pag-asa Home and School for the Blind before pursuing careers outside music.

The company said the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted the livelihoods of several members, many of whom worked as massage therapists.

The group later reunited through online performances before returning to live public appearances, including busking sessions along Session Road in Baguio City.

SM Supermalls said community support and donated or borrowed instruments helped the ensemble resume regular performances before it became part of the mall’s weekend entertainment program.

The company said the performances provide members with an opportunity to earn while showcasing traditional Filipino music to mallgoers.

John Paredes, coordinator of the Philippine Rondalla Serenata, said the performances have given the group both visibility and recognition.

“Every time we are given the opportunity to perform, we feel excited, important, and genuinely valued,” Paredes said in a statement released by SM Supermalls.

He said performing under the mall’s busking program gives the musicians “a strong sense of dignity and recognition.”

According to SM Supermalls, the ensemble has also performed at community events, charitable concerts, cultural festivals and in a Filipiniana-themed motion picture.

The company said it hopes the performances encourage greater appreciation for Filipino musical traditions while demonstrating the capabilities of persons with visual impairment when given opportunities to perform professionally.

For many weekend visitors, the performances offer not only live entertainment but also a glimpse into the resilience of musicians who have rebuilt their careers through their shared passion for Filipino music.
