BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — As the calendar turned to January 1, 2025, Baguio City woke up to a sight that felt almost like a gift from the heavens: a sunrise so vibrant and breathtaking, it seemed to embody the spirit of renewal and hope for the year ahead.

Known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” Baguio City is famous for its cool climate, pine-covered hills, and charming atmosphere, but this first sunrise of the year added a magical touch to its already picturesque reputation.

The sky was a canvas, painted in hues of fiery orange, blush pink, soft lavender, and golden yellow.

The sight was so captivating that even those who hadn’t planned to start the year with an early wake-up call found themselves drawn outdoors, phones in hand, to capture and share the moment.

One of the most striking aspects of the sunrise was how the light danced across the city’s rugged terrain, illuminating the lush greenery and shimmering off the dew-kissed pine trees.

At the edges of the city, the Cordillera mountain range stood like sentinels, silhouetted against the glowing sky.

For many, the sunrise symbolized a fresh start—a promise of brighter days to come.

A vendor at Burnham Park shared her thoughts, saying, “Dagiti kulay itatta bigat ket mangiparemind nga bendisyon iti tunggal aldaw. Kastoy ti pangumpisaan tayo ti tawen—napno iti panagayat ken positibo a panagpanunot.”

Some artists and photographers couldn’t resist capturing the moment, drawing inspiration from the vivid colors of the sunrise.

Beyond the aesthetics, this sunrise carried an almost poetic resonance.

It felt like a visual metaphor for resilience—how, after every dark night, there is light.

For Baguio City, which has faced its share of challenges in recent years, this sunrise was not just a celestial event but a message: the future holds endless possibilities, and beauty can always be found in new beginnings.

As the sun climbed higher, painting the city in a gentle warmth, life resumed in Baguio.

But for those who witnessed this celestial marvel, the memory lingered, etched into their hearts as a moment of peace, inspiration, and boundless hope for the year ahead.

As the day progressed, the sunny optimism brought by the dazzling sunrise gave way to a brief drizzle in the afternoon.

The light rain added a refreshing coolness to the air, a reminder of Baguio City’s ever-changing weather.

Residents went about their day unfazed, many even enjoying the gentle patter of raindrops against the pine trees.

The rains persisted in the days that followed, in line with PAG-ASA’s forecast of a five-day rainy spell.

While the showers may have dampened outdoor plans, they also served as a much-needed refresh for the city’s lush greenery and iconic parks.

Locals took the rain in stride, seeing it as nature’s way of blessing the new year with abundance and growth.

Indeed, Baguio City was blessed on this first morning of 2025—not just with a sunrise, but with a reminder of all that makes life extraordinary.
