BAGUIO CITY, Philippines, July 13, 2026 — A young assistant baker in Baguio City is showing how family support, inclusive education and workplace opportunities can help people on the autism spectrum build meaningful careers and contribute to their communities.

Josef, who was diagnosed with autism at age four, has spent nearly a decade building his career with the Vizco’s family of businesses after what began as an on-the-job training placement evolved into full-time employment.

His story, shared by SM Supermalls as part of its campaign highlighting inspiring members of its tenant community, underscores the role of acceptance and sustained support in helping individuals with autism reach their potential.

Josef completed a degree in Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Management at Saint Louis University before beginning his internship at Baguio Country Club.

He later joined Vizco’s in 2016 as an assistant baker, where his responsibilities have expanded beyond baking to include kitchen support and administrative work.

Alongside his daily duties, Josef has continued to develop professionally through workplace safety seminars, environmental training and Basic Life Support certification, demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning.

His interests extend beyond the workplace.

An avid cyclist and basketball enthusiast, Josef is also an accomplished photographer whose work has been featured in annual photography workshops and exhibitions organized by the Autism Society Philippines Baguio through its Colors of “A” Spectrum program at SM City Baguio.

FAMILY FOUNDATION. Josef poses with his parents, Noli and Belette Vizcocho. Their unwavering love, acceptance and support have been the foundation of Josef's journey from an autism diagnosis in childhood to a fulfilling career and active involvement in the community.

For Josef’s mother, Belette Vizcocho, acceptance was the first and most important step after learning of her son’s diagnosis.

“When you first learn that your child has autism, it is not really easy, but I think what is important is acceptance,” she said in the statement.

SM City Baguio Mall Manager Arch. Jerico Bernardo said stories such as Josef’s demonstrate how inclusive communities benefit both individuals and businesses.

“At SM City Baguio, we value not only the businesses that are part of our community but also the inspiring people behind them. Josef’s journey reflects the power of acceptance, perseverance, and the opportunities that help individuals reach their full potential,” Bernardo said.

The feature forms part of SM Supermalls’ continuing efforts to spotlight stories of inclusion among its tenants and partners, emphasizing that meaningful employment and supportive environments can help people with disabilities achieve personal and professional success.

For advocates of autism inclusion, Josef’s journey offers a reminder that opportunities built on understanding, patience and belief can create lasting impact—not only for individuals, but for families, workplaces and communities alike.
