MANILA, Philippines — Senator Risa Hontiveros has called for the complete shutdown of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), citing their alleged ties to organized crime and complicity of some public officials.

During a Senate hearing on August 28, 2024, Hontiveros emphasized the need for stronger coordination between law enforcement, regulatory agencies, and local government units to ensure the permanent closure of these operations.

Despite President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for a total POGO ban in his State of the Nation Address (SONA), Hontiveros noted that underground POGO activities continue.

She urged authorities to enforce the ban and prevent any attempts at rebranding or relocation of POGOs under different guises.
