BAGUIO CITY — Baguio health officials have urged residents to take precautions against leptospirosis after exposure to floodwater or areas that may have been contaminated by rat urine, as health authorities reported cases in the city and called for prompt medical consultation among those at risk.

The reminder was discussed during the Baguio City Council’s regular session on Aug. 17, 2026, where health officials also provided updates on dengue and COVID-19, according to a press release issued by the Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Baguio.

Data presented from Baguio General Hospital showed that six leptospirosis patients had been admitted.

Two had recovered, while four remained confined but were not in critical condition and were recovering, the release said.

Two of the four current patients were Baguio residents.

The City Health Services Office, meanwhile, had recorded 14 leptospirosis cases, including five new cases in July, according to the press release.

Leptospirosis can be contracted through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, including rats, particularly when bacteria enter the body through cuts or open wounds, health officials said.

Officials also emphasized prophylaxis for people facing a higher risk of exposure, including responders and frontliners involved in clean-up and emergency activities.

CHSO City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit Head Dr. Donabel Panes recalled the deaths of two barangay council members, or kagawads, who took part in a clean-up drive.

According to the press release, Panes said the two had been exposed during the activity, did not take prophylaxis and later died from leptospirosis.

The account was presented by health officials during the council session.

The CHSO said prophylaxis was available at its main office, city health centers and the City Hall clinic.

Panes and CHSO Head Celia Brillantes said prophylaxis could be taken within 72 hours of exposure, with a recommended dose of two 100-milligram capsules under a doctor’s guidance, according to the release.

Residents who may have been exposed to potentially contaminated water or areas were urged to seek medical advice promptly, particularly if they have wounds or other possible entry points for infection.
