BAGUIO CITY — Eight people were confirmed dead and two remained missing as of Monday evening after a landslide struck three houses in Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, amid continuing rain.
The Baguio City government said 11 of the 13 people affected had been recovered as of 8 p.m. on Aug. 10, with three found alive and eight deceased.
Search, rescue and retrieval operations remained underway for the two missing people.
Among those confirmed dead were a 17-year-old female student, a 9-year-old male student, another 9-year-old female student and a 56-year-old man, according to information provided by authorities.
The three survivors were identified as a 27-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and a 77-year-old pastor.
The two people still missing were children aged 3 and 8, authorities said.
The landslide occurred at about 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9, amid continuing rain, according to city authorities. Three houses were affected by the erosion, involving five families.
Personnel from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Baguio City Fire Station, Baguio City Police Office and barangay responders proceeded to the area to conduct search and rescue operations, clearing soil and debris from the affected structures, Mayor Benjamin Magalong said.
About 150 rescuers were working on a rotation basis as the search and retrieval operation continued, Magalong said.
The mayor said the area remained dangerous because of the steep hillside and loose soil.
Additional equipment was brought in to help clear a large slab at the site, while K9 units were deployed to assist in locating people who may still be beneath the debris.
Nearby residents in high-risk areas were also evacuated as authorities continued to monitor other landslide-prone locations.
Magalong said about 14 landslide incidents had been monitored across Baguio City amid continuing heavy rain.
He urged residents to remain vigilant for signs of danger, including falling trees, soil erosion and ground cracks, and to call 911 during emergencies.
A dog was also rescued from the debris after nearly 24 hours, according to reports from the site. The animal’s owner was reportedly among those affected by the landslide.
Search, rescue and retrieval operations remained ongoing as responders worked to locate the two missing children.
