Media's crucial role highlighted at PHIVOLCS media briefing in Baguio
BAGUIO CITY — The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) organized a media briefing on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at Hotel Elizabeth, here.
The event, titled “PHIVOLCS Infopress: Understanding and Communicating the ‘Big One’ Scenario in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR),” aimed to enhance science communication by clarifying common terms, discussing science-based earthquake scenarios and preparedness measures, and sharing best practices in media reporting.
The participants comprised media practitioners from both public and private sectors, information officers, and representatives from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC), including the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Presidential Communications Office (PCO), and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
During the briefing, PHIVOLCS Director Teresito C. Bacolcol emphasized the crucial role of the media in disseminating timely and accurate information, particularly during emergency situations.
The event provided a platform to elucidate frequently used terms in reporting geophysical hazards such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
Director Bacolcol also underscored the significance of delivering warnings and information in local languages for better comprehension and effectiveness.
DOST-Cordillera Regional Director Nancy A. Bantog encouraged participants to play their part in disseminating vital and precise information to the public.
Their collective efforts would contribute to ensuring the public’s awareness and preparedness in the face of potential natural disasters.
“A well-informed citizenry is crucial in building a well-prepared and resilient community, thus each of us is tasked to widen our scientific knowledge and understanding as we help in communicating the ‘Big One’ to our constituents,” Bantog said.
By organizing such informative gatherings, DOST-PHIVOLCS aims to strengthen collaboration between scientists, media practitioners, and information officers, fostering an environment of accurate reporting and effective communication to safeguard the well-being of the communities within the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
