BAGUIO CITY – A concerning increase in theft incidents within the city has been recorded by the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) during the first seven (7) months of 2024.
From the 83 recorded theft cases from January to July last year, a 35% increase were reported, bringing the total to 112 cases this year.
Although July 2024 constituted a significant 50% decrease in theft cases, the surge in incidents earlier this year has sparked calls for heightened security measures from both residents and business owners.
According to reports covering January to July of 2023 and 2024, the majority of theft incidents occurred in commercial and business establishments, with 43 cases reported in 2023 and 39 in 2024.
Residential areas, including houses and condominiums, reported 19 incidents last year and 10 this year.
Street thefts showed a slight increase, with 10 cases last year and 13 this year.
Shoplifting was the most common modus operandi, accounting for 33 cases in the first seven months of 2023 and 19 cases in the same period of 2024.
Other significant tactics included “salisi” thefts, pickpocketing, and “salisi” incidents within establishments.
Employee theft contributed to 15 cases last year, compared to 7 cases this year.
While the BCPO is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the public, police officers can only intervene private spaces under specific circumstances, such as when a crime is reported, or with a warrant.
Significantly, the BCPO’s effort to address the surge brought to the arrest of nearly half of the identified accused.
To enhance city safety, Baguio police are continuing efforts to execute arrest warrants for the remaining identified suspects.
As such, the BCPO is urging the public to bolster personal and property security.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to stay vigilant, particularly in crowded areas, ensuring that doors and windows are secured and that valuables are never left unattended in public spaces.
Strengthening the security of establishments is also vital.
The BCPO recommends improving outdoor lighting, employing security personnel when necessary, and implementing strict access controls in both commercial and residential properties.
Moreover, the BCPO strongly suggests the installation of CCTV systems that meet standard requirements to provide clear and comprehensive coverage.
To facilitate prompt and proactive responses, it is advised that CCTV feeds be actively monitored by dedicated personnel.
Regular maintenance and checks of these surveillance systems are essential to ensure they remain operational.
BCPO city director Francisco B. Bulwayan, Jr. emphasizes the importance of community involvement, stating, “The support and alertness of the community will play a vital role in curbing these trends and ensuring a secure environment for everyone.”
In line with this, the BCPO (Baguio’s Finest) urges the public to promptly report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station.
