BAGUIO CITY – A geneticist at Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) has issued a warning about the rising number of Down syndrome cases affecting children in Benguet and nearby areas.
Dr. Mary Erika Orteza, a geneticist at BGHMC, attributes this increase primarily to chromosomal abnormalities in parents.
Dr. Orteza emphasizes the importance of early detection through prenatal ultrasounds, which can guide parents on how to care for children with Down syndrome.
Early diagnosis allows for better management of potential behavioral problems and helps parents prepare for their child’s needs.
There is a growing number of parents seeking consultations at BGHMC for congenital anomalies, indicating increased awareness of available expert guidance.
Dr. Orteza advises pregnant mothers to undergo ultrasounds early in their pregnancy to identify any anomalies and receive appropriate guidance.
BGHMC, where Dr. Orteza is based, offers expert advice on managing children with special needs and detecting anomalies early.
However, Dr. Orteza notes that not all children with special needs qualify for Persons with Disability (PWD) identification cards, as eligibility depends on the severity of their condition, which requires assessment by experts.
BGHMC remains committed to providing support and guidance to pregnant women and children with special needs, helping them navigate the challenges and integrate into mainstream society.
