MANILA, Philippines — Senator Risa Hontiveros has expressed strong support for the Office of the Solicitor General’s (OSG) initiative to proactively revoke birth certificates fraudulently obtained by foreign nationals, calling it a vital step to safeguard the country’s institutions from exploitation.

In a statement, the senator emphasized the importance of vigilance, particularly against foreign nationals who misuse Philippine birth certificates for unlawful purposes.

“Ngayong bagong taon, dapat New Year’s resolution na ng gobyerno ang matiyak na walang dayuhan ang mananamantala ng ating mga institusyon,” the senator said.

(This New Year, the government should make it a resolution to ensure that no foreigner will exploit our institutions.)

The senator highlighted concerns about Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), pointing to efforts by some criminals within the industry to illegitimately acquire Filipino citizenship.

The lawmaker urged authorities to identify and prosecute offenders.

The senator also called on the OSG to prioritize confiscating properties illegally used by POGOs.

These assets, the senator proposed, should be allocated as reparations for human trafficking survivors in accordance with the Anti-Financial Account and Scamming Act.

“I hope the year 2025 is the year we finally pass the Anti-POGO Act,” the senator added, stressing the need for comprehensive legislation to put an end to POGO-related scams, violence, and deception.
