Inaugural Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Basketball Cup starts rolling

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The anticipated inaugural Congressman Eric Go Yap Basketball Cup is set to tip off this coming Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Benguet State University gymnasium located in the municipality of La Trinidad, province of Benguet.

Fourteen teams hailing from the 13 municipalities of Benguet will showcase their talents in the inaugural Congressional Cup, generously sponsored by the office of Benguet Lone District representative Eric Go Yap.

This competition is designed to engage not only young aspiring basketball players but also seasoned veterans.

It will feature a thrilling single round-robin format, allowing each town the opportunity to serve as a host, fostering camaraderie and competition among the participating teams.

The congressman will be joined by Benguet governor Melchor D. Diclas and the 13 town mayors, who practically are team managers of their respective squads.

Ceremonial rites will begin at the BSU gym where the university’s president Felipe Comila will be host.

The 280 players will also take their oath of sportsmanship as they embark on a thrilling three-month-long competition journey.

This endeavor will lead them to various locations, including the mining towns of Mankayan in the north and Tuba and Itogon in the south, reaching as high as the majestic Mount Pulag in Kabayan and the cloud-kissed Atok, formerly home to the highest highway in the region.

The games will kick off promptly following the ceremonial toss, conducted by Yap himself—a passionate basketball player and an ardent enthusiast of sports, including mixed martial arts.

The highly anticipated teams include La Trinidad’s team A, Itogon, and Bokod, all having former varsity players in their line up.

Bokod mayor Thomas Wales, Jr. was asked on the chances of his team, which is poised to be a frontrunner, given the participation of former players from prestigious institutions such as the University of the Cordilleras, Saint Louis University, and Cordillera Career Development College.

“It’s anybody’s ball game,”  Mayor Wales, Jr. said.

Games are slated for weekends, as well as on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Wednesdays.

The elimination round of the competition is anticipated to conclude by the first week of November.

From there, the top eight teams will progress to the quarterfinals, with the four leading teams enjoying the coveted twice-to-beat advantage against the lower-seeded competitors.

The victorious teams from the quarterfinals will then advance to the prestigious Final Four, where the top and lowest seeds will clash, with the higher seed having the advantage of a twice-to-beat scenario.

In the ultimate showdown, the winners of the semifinals will engage in a thrilling best-of-three format to vie for the championship cup.

Furthermore, generous cash prizes are set to reward the victorious teams, while consolation prizes will be extended to the teams that didn’t clinch victory.

Exceptional performance will not go unnoticed, as both standout players from winning and losing teams will be honored with special prizes.

The tournament’s Most Valuable Player will be recognized, and selections for the mythical five and second team will also be made.

As a culmination of this exciting sporting event, the awarding ceremony is slated to take place during the concluding day of the Adivay celebration, creating a memorable conclusion to this remarkable competition.
