BAGUIO CITY – The Baguio City Council, through a resolution, has requested the Department of Public Works and Highways-Baguio City District Engineering Office (DPWH-BCDEO) to integrate sidewalks into their road widening projects within the city.
Authored by Councilor Benny Bomogao, the resolution states there is a need to create sidewalks along major national roads in the city such as Kennon Road, Aspiras-Palispis Highway (formerly known as Marcos Highway), and Quirino Highway (formerly known as Naguilian Road).
Despite ongoing road expansion efforts by the DPWH to accommodate increasing vehicular traffic, Bomogao said there is persistent high foot traffic in these areas, thus the need for pedestrian-friendly infrastructure to ensure public safety and prevent accidents.
Bomogao said sidewalks are essential in separating pedestrian pathways from vehicular lanes to enhance pedestrian mobility and reduce risks associated with sharing the road with vehicles.
