BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Erika Kirk, the widow of slain U.S. conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has been named chief executive officer and chair of the board of Turning Point USA, the youth-focused political organization her husband founded more than a decade ago.

The announcement comes just over a week after Kirk, 31, was fatally shot during a campus event at Utah Valley University on September 10 — the opening stop of his national “American Comeback Tour.” Authorities said he was struck in the neck and later died at a hospital (Reuters).

Police have arrested 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson, who is accused of firing a Mauser .30-06 rifle at Kirk from outside the venue. Robinson faces charges including aggravated murder and multiple felonies. He has not cooperated with investigators, officials told Business Insider (Business Insider).

Turning Point USA’s board said Charlie Kirk had previously expressed that Erika should succeed him if anything were to happen. She has pledged to continue his initiatives, including the campus tour and media programs, while expanding the group’s outreach.

“This movement is bigger than one person,” she said in a statement quoted by Politico (Politico).

The political fallout has been swift. Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced Kirk will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, calling him “a true American patriot” (Politico).

The White House also ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor (White House).

Meanwhile, Turning Point USA reports a surge of interest from students seeking to start new chapters across the country. Erika Kirk has vowed to press on with her husband’s vision despite the tragedy.

“Charlie devoted his life to equipping young people to love America,” she said. “We will not let his voice be silenced.”

The assassination has sparked international concern. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned it as “a heinous act” and “a deep wound for democracy” (AP News).

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Kirk “a lion-hearted friend of Israel” who was “murdered for speaking truth and defending freedom” (Fox News).

In the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “We must all be free to debate openly and freely without fear – there can be no justification for political violence.”
