BAGUIO CITY – All registered senior citizens in Baguio City may receive an annual Christmas bonus of P500 once a local ordinance is enacted.
Authored by Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr., the proposed measure aims to expand the privileges granted to senior citizens under the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003 or Republic Act No. 9257.
Under the ordinance, all senior citizens associations of Baguio City must submit the lists of all registered senior citizens in their respective barangays to the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) on or before November 15 every year.
The OSCA will prepare and certify a master list of all registered senior citizens in the city and submit it to the Baguio City Council and the city mayor for approval.
A P5-million fund will be appropriated for Fiscal Year 2025 for the grant of the senior citizens’ Christmas bonus, provided that the allocation and disbursement of the said amount is subject to the limitations of existing government accounting and auditing rules and regulations.
If the allocated P5 million is insufficient to accommodate all registered members, the additional funds required will be sourced from any available funds of the city.
For subsequent years, the amount needed to continue implementing the ordinance will be included in the City’s annual budget.
The proposed ordinance has been approved on first reading by the Baguio City Council and referred to the Committee on Appropriations and Finance Cluster A for review.
