BAGUIO CITY — Authorities destroyed 14,362 confiscated and surrendered illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices during a ceremonial activity at the Melvin Jones Grounds on January 7, 2026, as part of intensified efforts to protect public safety and prevent firecracker-related incidents.
The destruction was led by Baguio City Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong, together with PCOL Julio S. Lizardo, Deputy Regional Director for Administration of the Police Regional Office Cordillera Administrative Region (PRO CAR), and PCOL Ruel D. Tagel, City Director of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO).
Police rendered the seized items inert by soaking them in water before crushing them using a heavy truck.
The destroyed materials included boga, or improvised cannons, and various unlicensed firecrackers confiscated during intensified police operations conducted in recent weeks.
Authorities said the operations were aimed at preventing injuries, accidents, and possible loss of life, particularly during festive celebrations when illegal fireworks pose heightened risks to the public.
In his message, PCOL Lizardo underscored the importance of community cooperation in maintaining public safety and thanked law enforcement units and local government officials for their coordinated efforts in enforcing firecracker laws and educating the public.
Mayor Magalong commended the police force and partner agencies for their active support of the campaign and encouraged residents to observe safer and more responsible ways of celebrating special occasions.
Following the ceremony, PCOL Lizardo reiterated the commitment of PRO CAR, the BCPO, and partner agencies to strictly enforce laws regulating firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.
The activity reinforced the implementation of Republic Act No. 7183, which regulates the sale, manufacture, distribution, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, as well as City Ordinance No. 53, Series of 2009, which imposes a year-round ban on prohibited firecrackers within Baguio City.
