MANILA — The Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) has elected UnionBank President and Chief Executive Officer Ana Aboitiz Delgado as its president for the 2026–2027 term, marking the first time a woman will lead the influential industry group in its nearly 80-year history.

Delgado’s appointment comes as the Philippine banking sector confronts rapid digital transformation, the expanding use of artificial intelligence, and a more complex global risk environment.

She has served as president and CEO of UnionBank since January 2025, capping more than two decades at the lender where she helped spearhead its shift toward digital banking, while overseeing consumer finance, institutional and SME banking, and customer experience initiatives.

In a statement, Delgado underscored the need for stronger industry coordination as risks grow more interconnected.

“As we accelerate digitalization and unlock the potential of AI, we also face a next generation of risks that extend beyond individual institutions and national borders,” she said. “These risks are further compounded by the economic impact arising from geopolitical uncertainty.”

She added that the evolving landscape highlights BAP’s role in strengthening collaboration across banks and ensuring trust in the financial system.

The BAP, which represents the country’s universal and commercial banks, plays a central role in promoting financial stability, aligning industry standards, and coordinating sector-wide initiatives.

Delgado is expected to steer the organization through a period where technology-driven innovation must be balanced with resilience against cyber threats, operational disruptions, and global economic volatility.
