BAGUIO CITY — Plant enthusiasts gathered at SM City Baguio for a hands-on kokedama workshop held as part of the annual Panagbenga Festival celebrations, highlighting sustainable plant care and eco-friendly living practices.

The session was led by Nanay Tetchie Palaganas, who guided participants through the Japanese-inspired art of kokedama — a method of growing plants in moss-covered soil balls instead of conventional pots.

Kokedama, which translates to “moss ball,” offers an alternative to plastic and ceramic containers, encouraging plant lovers to reduce waste while creatively displaying greenery in their homes.

Participants learned how to prepare soil mixtures, wrap plant roots in moss, and secure them with twine, creating decorative, pot-less plant arrangements that can be hung or displayed on flat surfaces.

Organizers said the workshop underscored the importance of sustainable living, promoting environmentally conscious habits through practical, hands-on learning.

By integrating culture, creativity and sustainability, the activity also reinforced Panagbenga’s broader celebration of nature and community.

SM City Baguio, which brands itself as the Home of Everyday Celebrations, said it continues to host events that foster shared experiences and bring communities together through accessible and meaningful activities.

For attendees, the workshop served as both a creative outlet and a small but meaningful celebration — uniting a growing community of plant lovers committed to sustainability.
