BAGUIO CITY – During the 40th Grappling Cup held over the weekend, YMCA Baguio/CCDC made a surprising performance, securing six gold medals, three silvers, and two bronze medals.
Despite falling short behind Lakay Central Gym, they managed a commendable second-place finish overall.
Andro Kienh Cudao led YMCA, winning gold in the seniors male 72-79 kg novice category.
Rizaldy Rivera and Klein Ashrell Sudango also added golds in their respective categories.
Young grapplers Zhil Castiel Corpuz, Adrian Seth Arorong, and Cyrus Kendrick Aniban dominated their divisions, each bagging a gold medal.
Lakay Central Gym continued to dominate the event, grabbing seven medals in total.
The gold medalists from Lakay Central included Hyuma Zan Sibaen, Aeyesha Raven Bantasan, Vincent Bangwa, Ralph Cervantes, Dalemarie Mayos, Jerlyn Kingad, and Ezra Saclag.
Other notable performances included Gridlock Overlimit, which scooped five gold medals and two silver for a third-place finish, and Ronin Checkmat, which secured four gold medals, six silver, and three bronze to finish fourth overall.
The one-day competition saw participation from at least 20 teams with close to 200 grapplers, showcasing their technical prowess, strength, and agility.
The Grappling Cup is one of the few events of Team Lakay in partnership with YMCA, aimed at providing opportunities for aspiring grapplers to hone their skills and compete on a larger stage.
A Memorandum of Agreement was also signed by Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao and YMCA president Dennis Basal, Secretary-general Rev. Robert Baris Sison, and other board of directors for the staging of grappling tournaments.
