DAR, Baguio City empower farmers with machinery and training initiative

BAGUIO CITY – In a collaborative effort between the Department of Agrarian Reform – Cordillera Administrative Region (DAR-CAR), DAR-Benguet, and the Baguio City Government’s City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO), a significant stride was taken to empower local farmers.

A turnover ceremony held at the Baguio City Hall marked the transfer of Farm Machineries and Equipment (FME) valued at Php 320,000 to the Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organization (ARBO) Taloy Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative (TAFARMCO).

The TAFARMCO, represented by its CEO Angel P. Garcia Jr., received 5 Hand tractors and 1 unit of an agricultural shredder.

Expressing profound gratitude, Garcia highlighted the pivotal role of DAR in consistently supporting their endeavors, affirming that this assistance will not only benefit TAFARMCO but also extend aid to partner farmers’ associations in Baguio City.

Through this initiative, TAFARMCO pledged to extend support to various farmers’ associations, namely: Barangay Happy Hallow Farmers Organization, Buat Balite Farmers Association, Granjeros de Oeste, and Ditep Farmers Association, by providing them with hand tractors to elevate their production capacity.

Moreover, TAFARMCO committed to marketing the produce and products cultivated by these associations.

This holistic endeavor encompasses comprehensive training sessions aimed at fostering agricultural sustainability.

The training includes Climate Change mitigation and adaptation strategies and capacity-building seminars on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Organic Agriculture, and the proper utilization and disposal of fertilizers and pesticides.

Resource persons hailing from various governmental bodies such as DAR, the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Training Institute, CVAO, and the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority will spearhead these educational programs.

Dr. Silardo Bested, head of CVAO, expressed deep gratitude to DAR for their crucial contribution in providing much-needed FMEs to support Baguio farmers.

He emphasized the significance of these resources in sustaining agricultural activities within the city, despite its size.
