CAMP BADO DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet – Two retiring police dogs were given honors by the Police Regional Office (PRO) Cordillera during the “Salamat Kapatid and Kaibigan Program” held at the Multi-Purpose Center, Camp Major Bado Dangwa, La Trinidad Benguet, on September 22, 2023.

PRO Cordillera officer-in-charge Patrick Joseph G. Allan together with PRO Cordillera deputy regional director for Operation Ronald V. Gayo led the presentation of Certificates of Recognition and treats to the Belgian Malinois canine honorees, Balsy and Zeus.

Zeus served the PNP for 7 years as a Search and Rescue Dog (SARD), while Balsy served for 9 years as an Explosive and Detection Dog (EDD).

Zeus was awarded an Outstanding Service Medal and Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding performance as a rescue dog that contributed immensely to the recovery of two victims during the landslide at Antamok River in Itogon, Benguet, from August 17 to 20, 2021.

Balsy made history as the first police dog to serve the PNP in the Cordillera Region.

He played a crucial role as a K9 contingent during VIP visits in Baguio City and was deployed across the Cordillera Region as part of the EOD and K9 teams.

Balsy ensured security during special events, holidays, fiestas, and was a regular presence at the Harrison Road night market until his retirement.

PBGEN Allan awarded Medalya ng Papuri (PNP Commendation Medal) to PMSg Arman L. Acangan, Balsy’s handler, and Pat Cyrus Backeng, Zeus’ handler, for guiding and training the two canines.

Both police service dogs have been adopted by PNP personnel and will soon transition to their new homes in retirement.
