Inaugural Victory Day Bike Ride, PVB's tribute to WWII veterans
BAGUIO CITY – In a significant gesture to honor the valor and sacrifices of World War II veterans, the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) has announced its pioneering role in organizing the inaugural Victory Day Bike Ride, set to take place on September 3, 2023, within the picturesque bounds of Baguio City.
With a dual purpose of celebrating the historical significance of Victory Day and promoting a sense of unity among cycling enthusiasts and history aficionados, the event is set to underscore the enduring legacy of courage and resilience.
This groundbreaking initiative comes to life through a collaboration between PVB, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), the City Government of Baguio, Wartime Heritage Guild Philippines (WHG), Without Limits, and Salgado PR.
Elucidating the historical context and importance of September 3rd, PVB’s first vice president for Marketing and Communications Mike Villa-Real shared during a press briefing on Monday, August 14, 2023, that this date, signifying the surrender of General Tomoyuki Yamashita and commemorating Victory Day in the Philippines, was officially recognized as a special working holiday in 2018 under RA 11216.
Villa-Real emphasized that this day in 1945 holds immense historical weight, representing not only the triumph but also the indomitable spirit and sacrifices of both United States and Filipino soldiers.
He also noted that although this date carries deep significance, it remains relatively less known than the well-observed “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor) on April 9th each year.
Highlighting the need to encompass the entirety of the World War II narrative, Villa-Real remarked, “Maybe it should be high time to complete the story of WWII.”
The event seeks to achieve a profound appreciation of Baguio City’s significant role during WWII while also encouraging widespread participation in cycling among individuals of diverse ages and backgrounds.
Taking inspiration from the annual Ride for Valor, which retraces the poignant Death March, the Victory Day Bike Ride will chart a unique course, exploring Baguio City’s historical sites linked to its WWII contributions.
Beyond being a sporting event, the ride also takes on a philanthropic aspect by aiming to generate funds for the maintenance of the country’s historical markers and other WWII heritage sites.
The bike ride will commence at 7:00 am on September 3rd, unfolding along a 44.5-kilometer route commencing at the Baguio City Hall and culminating at the iconic Camp John Hay.
Designed as a non-competitive venture, the ride features five strategic pit stops:
- Camp Allen (with a re-enactment activity remembering history)
- USAFIP-NL Marker at Cooyeesan, along Naguilian Road
- Sablan View Deck (with a re-enactment activity remembering Yamashita’s retreat from San Fernando, La Union to Baguio City and to Kiangan, Ifugao)
- Fort del Pilar (PMA) for a wreath-laying ceremony, remembering the PMA cadets who volunteered during WWII, and a re-enactment at the Borromeo Field of Yamashita’s surrender in Kiangan, Ifugao
- Finish Line – Camp John Hay (closing ceremonies at Scouts Hill)
The event prioritizes safety and rider support, with mechanics ready to assist participants facing mechanical issues. Roving marshals will ensure seamless progress throughout the ride.
While support vehicles are permitted, riders are encouraged to ride within the event, should they choose to participate.
Safety measures include the implementation of a “No helmet, No ride” policy and the requirement of full vaccination for participants.
Registered participants will enjoy exclusive perks, including an official event shirt, a race bib and passport, a loot bag, a post-ride meal, and a commemorative medal. The registration fee is Php600.
Under the direction of Victory Day Bike Ride race director Ian Alacar, the event aims to accommodate 150 participants aged 16 to 65 years old, fostering a diverse and inclusive gathering.
