Baguio honors 125th year of Philippine independence with cultural music and dances

BAGUIO CITY — The city government of Baguio reverberated with the spirit of patriotism and cultural pride as it commemorated the 125th anniversary of the country’s independence at the Baguio Convention and Cultural Center on Monday, with an enchanting showcase vibrant performances that paid tribute to the rich Filipino heritage.

In a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving and promoting Filipino culture, the commemoration unfolded as a colorful extravaganza of sights and sounds.

The iconic Philippine flag, crafted with vibrant flowers, served as a befitting backdrop for the celebration.

The singing of the national anthem led by the University of Baguio Voices Chorale filled the air with a sense of unity and pride.

Among the attendees included the Local Chief Executive Benjamin B. Magalong, Congressman Mark Go represented by wife Soledad Go, the City Concilors, the City Government department heads, the Baguio City Police Office, national line agencies, the Veteran Federation of the Philippines, the academe, barangay officials, and the Executive Council of the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

The University of Baguio Voices Chorale, Rondalla, and Graces Dance Troupe brought to life the essence of Filipino traditions through a diverse range of music and dances.

Congressman Mark Go, represented by wife Soledad Go in his opening remarks, emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, “As we commemorate this independence day, let us do so with a renewed sense of pride, unity and determination. Let us draw inspiration from our history, celebrate our achievements, and channel that energy into creating a nation that is prosperous, inclusive, and filled with boundless opportunities for all Filipinos.”

“Remember that the power to shape our destiny lies within each and every one of us. Rise above challenges, seize opportunity, and build a future that we can be proud to pass onto future generations,” Mrs. Go stated.

Mrs. Go also imparted advice to the youth, encouraging them to embrace the pillars of education, innovation, and social responsibility.

“Pursue your dreams with fervor and determination. It is your passion, your ideas, and your actions that will shape the destiny of our nation,” Mrs. Go said.

Furthermore, Mrs. Go acknowledged the presence of the Filipino war veterans, stating, “They are the heroes who have paved the way for the freedom that we enjoy today. May we continue to uphold the values they worked for and may we stand united in our pursuit of progress and may the spirit of Philippine independence guide us towards a brighter and more prosperous future.”

For his part, Vice Mayor Faustino A. Olowan, represented by Councilor Jose M. Molintas, emphasized that freedom carries a responsibility and called upon everyone to be proactive citizens, actively contributing to the welfare of the community.

He urged the collective effort towards building a just, equal, and respectful society for all.

“Today, we are faced with new struggles: poverty, inequality, corruption, and divisiveness, but let us be reminded that our heroes faced similar challenges and it was through their unity and collective efforts that they have overcome them,” Molintas said

Councilor Molintas also emphasized the importance of cherishing diversity above all, acknowledging that the country is blessed with a wealth of culture, languages, and traditions.

He highlighted that it is this diversity that strengthens, empowers, and beautifies the nation.

By embracing these differences and fostering collaboration, a brighter future can be built, rooted in unity, harmony, and mutual respect.

“Celebrate our past, honor our heroes, and recommit ourselves to the noble ideals that our forefathers fought for. March forward with hope, courage and determination,” Molintas stated.

In his keynote address, Mayor Magalong emphasized that the commemoration should transcend mere remembrance and serve as a catalyst for action.

“Let us remember that our independence is not merely a celebration of our past. It is also a reminder of our responsibility towards the future… about sustainability… about fulfilling the need of the current generation without compromising the needs of the future generation,” the mayor stated.

He stated that freedom extends beyond the absence of foreign domination, emphasizing that it entails liberation from old paradigms that have hindered the nation’s progress.

“Let us break free from the divisive and self-serving mentality that has hindered our progress… It is time for a new era of politics where the interest of the people comes first and where unity and cooperation prevail,” Mayor Magalong stated.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of breaking free from the traditional mindset that confines public service solely to politics.

“Public service should be a noble calling open to individuals from all walks of life. We must encourage and empower individuals to have a genuine desire to serve the people regardless of their background or affiliation,” the mayor said.

He called upon everyone to strengthen their commitment to nation-building, carrying the torch of freedom to illuminate the path towards progress and inclusivity.

“As we look ahead, let us draw inspiration from the legacy of our heroes. Let their courage fuel our determination to build a better Baguio and a better nation. Together, we can forge a future filled with hope for every Baguio citizen and every Filipino can live a life of dignity and fulfillment,” the mayor stated.
